let me start out by saying this - I absolutely love her outfits in this movie. there I said it. now , this is what pretty woman was scared to be. it showed the real side of sex work and the fact that it rarely ever works out in women’s favor. it starts out with anora working as a stripper / escort and Ivan being the rich and reckless character with a tendency to make poor choices. throughout the movie you can tell Ivan is a product of cruel and detached parents. he also seems very stupid, like seriously a fucking idiot. there’s a few times in the movie where you can tell that Anora thinks he’s a dumb kid. one of the scenes that really drives this home is when anora and Ivan are in Las Vegas gambling and he’s just putting money on Random numbers at the table. He doesn’t know how to gamble, but he’s spending all of his money to impress his friends to look like a bad ass. she gives him this odd look and you can understand that she’s thinking “wow look at this retard blowing hundreds on a black jack table & he’s fucking awful at it”. anyways , if you don’t know sorry but spoiler!! they get married 🙃. there’s a lot of happy scenes after their marriage, but it’s soon turns very dark. this entire movie gives you a sense of hopelessness towards the end and looks very bleak for anoras character. there’s also so many parts in this movie that made me laugh out loud. who knew a movie could make you laugh your ass off and cry at the same time because of the sadness you feel for the characters. another thing I noticed is that anoras character fits in perfectly with Toro‘s character and the other dumb ass guy who got his nose broken. unfortunately, that woman was never going to fit in with Ivan’s family. she is considered lower class trash. and I believe that Ivan even thought of her in this way that she was something that could be used and then replaced when he was bored with her or when things got too complicated. anora took on this weird mother role with Ivan. in one of the scenes while they’re at the airport waiting for Ivan’s parents and anora is trying to talk to Ivan so she walks up to him and he closes his eyes like he’s asleep and then she walks away and he opens his eyes again. you know who else does that ? children. one of the scenes that really broke my heart was when anora gets absolutely embarrassed in front of Ivan’s mother and even his father, and she makes one last attempt to talk to him before they get on the plane. he then shuts her down and tells her “thank you for making my last trip to America so fun”. like he’s a child coming back home from summer camp and rehashing the summer camp fun with his bunk mate before his parents pick him up. Ivan and anoras marriage absolutely turned her life upside down and he has enough money, and of course, his parents to make all of his problems go away as for her on the other hand she has nothing and can rely on nobody. I’m sure as everybody turns this movie off they go back to thinking that this is stuff that only happens in movies. unfortunately, these things happen in real life and they happen a lot. sex workers & women alike are used for what they can provide to the people in their life & usually discarded afterwards. we see it time and time again with stay at home moms getting left for a younger version , etc. it’s a story as old as time. of course, with anora you see it from a taboo and very bleak point of view.
