This movie is so beautiful and so inspiring. I had never seen it before—I thought it was about a girl who travelled back in time to learn from her younger self—, but the simplicity of it made it so much better I had expected. In a sense, yes, that's exactly the plot. They see themselves in each other. Molly is "immature", and Ray is too cold for her short age. Both were deprived of their childhood, of the chance of being just a girl. I liked the way Molly is portrayed. Everyone loves her, she isn't unhappy—she's unfulfilled. She doesn't really have a purpose that she knows about. She is thankful for the hundreds of gifts she receives on her birthday (loved the detail of her asking the doorman to donate all of it) and the party that her friends plan for her, but she doesn't care too much about it. She is determined, though—when she grows fonder of this ridiculously polished little girl, Ray, she's determined to make her enjoy her childhood a bit more. But what she truly is searching for is a way of keeping Ray from feeling as lonely as she does. As she did when she was her age. The movie explores friendship and romantic relationships, also. How everyone seems to have their life together, yet she doesn't really know how to be an adult. She is special in her own way: she is lively, creative, and once she learns to care about Ray, she is less self-centered. This unexpected and unconventional friendship becomes her reason to be better. By creating a space for Ray to be more spontaneous and less guarded, Molly slowly lets go of the hurt her inner child had never dared to face, finally allowing herself to become an adult. She starts doing things on her own, for herself, like getting into fashion school even though she has the contacts to have a quick and easy start in the industry. It's sweet to see how much she's learnt from Ray's discipline, and by the end of the movie Molly's carefree energy fills Ray's dance performance. I loved how even though it was obvious she was the anonymous buyer of the guitar collection, it was used so beautifully for the performance to honor Molly and her impact on their lives. I cried a lot, which makes the movie a really good one. I loved it. On a final note, Molly's style and outfits were sooo pretty. And the scenario and cinematography, chef kiss. How I looove my New York city chick flicks <3
