vexillology /ˌveksəˈläləjē/ Vexillology is the scholarly study of the history, symbolism, and usage of flags, as well as the scientific analysis of their design. Coined by Whitney Smith in 1957, the term comes from the Latin vexillum (a flag or banner) and the Greek -logia (study). Vexillologists research, design, and document flags for nations, organizations, and individuals. Miriam Webster Dictionary
