Wish I could give two sets of ratings. The 2.5 is how much I enjoyed the movie but in terms of the movie’s themes, artistry and topics I would give it a 4/5.
I went in blind watching this movie. Had no idea what it was about at first. I thought the colour grading was beautiful and the overall aesthetic was pleasing. But the movie did make me uncomfortable because of all the sexual scenes and Elaine pissed me off so much. I found it weird and had to pause it multiple times and resume. This is just how I felt about watching it though.
In terms of the themes in this movie, I think it was done fantastically. Elaine is a complex character and I like how she’s kind of the protagonist and antagonist of the movie considering her destructive behaviours. But the real antagonist would be the patriarchy of course. I loved the symbolism with Tarot cards and the paintings in the movie. The objectification of Elaine and the women in this movie was portrayed nicely. I liked how it was done in a dramatic way but that’s unfortunately the reality.
To conclude, this movie was a good thinking piece about women, the patriarchy, trauma, lust etc… Unfortunately I did find it hard to watch because of how sexual it was - even though that’s the idea.
