it was so… soft. hindi siya plot-driven, rather puno siya ng dialogue about lots of things, including love. it feels so authentic, and the chemistry/tension between jesse and celine is palpable. and i loved that ang realistic nila — ng ugali nila, ng situation, ng conflicts between their perspectives. haha gets ko talaga si celine sa buong film e, though i’m not gonna lie, nainis rin ako kay jesse roon sa palm-reading part. i live vicariously through you, celine. nasa to be watched ko siya, but i did it today because nagulat nalang ako paggising ko 8pm from an afternoon nap, sian sent me a message, asking me whether i’m free and if want ko ba mag-watch movie. haha it had been hours before i woke up that he sent it so i actually initially asked him if done na siya sa pag-watch, assuming he did so alone or with another friend, but he was like, “wat” and i hesitantly replied sa message na yes, and that makes me feel nice na he waited for my response. then he sent me a list of his to be watched and then i saw this on the list and immediately chose it for my husband ethan hawke so :) we watched it together through gmeet and loved it. anyway, bagay talagang may kasama ka while watching this movie but okay din to watch it alone to self-reflect and really just… think about things.

watched with sian, again! i think muntik na hindi matuloy but like, he needed a distraction so i tried my best to be available for him. honestly, i had been pretty lost for a good amount of time while watching. gets ko pa nung una e, and then i just had so many thoughts running through my head and dagdag pa yung pasikot ng conversation nina jesse and celine throughout the film, god damn was i frustrated. i had to pause near the end and have sian explain to me just where the fuck we were. on the other hand, sian had been very pissed off kay celine most of the time, pero mas na-gets naman namin both bandang dulo na. for me, i was very understanding (ako pa ba 😘) towards both characters and tried to explain to him what i could. their personalities changed — as it would with the nine years that passed — but it was a lot to take in. celine’s newfound pessimism and the way she always contradicted herself caught us off-guard, honestly. plus, gulat kami kay jesse! we thought he was being sarcastic but no! he is legitimately married! (and with a kid!) and celine has a bf! it was a good sequel, with an amazing ending. we were actually initially confused by the gradual blackening of the screen, but once the realization set in, mapapa-applause ka nalang talaga. (tangina, what happened with celine’s bf though?) celine’s song was also pretty good. i embraced myself for the possible secondhand embarrassment but the waltz ended up being so ganda :)

sian and i were excited to watch it immediately after the second part of the series but i believe it would have been better if we waited muna. the very beginning was fine—the airport scene, the car ride—we really got to see the transformation that occurred nine years into the future. but then the middle part, particularly the scenes with their friends, just dragged on. it was all just sex jokes and banal conversations to the point that we actually had to stop watching and instead resumed the day after. the new characters provided nothing interesting, and they weren’t even relevant from then on. but it once again started to pick up once jesse and celine began to walk to the hotel. we just caught another glimpse of the pair we once knew and grown to love despite their now very-adult issues and conflicts and weary perspectives in life. the hotel scene itself—while the explicitness shocked me truly—was the highlight of the movie. the thing about this film is that even from the beginning, they never shied away from showing the growing tension between jesse and celine. and then everything just blew up in the hotel when they were trying to fuck. i sympathized with jesse but as a woman, i empathized with celine. honestly, the ending left me with mixed feelings. they resolved nothing—nothing AT ALL—except perhaps they gave the viewers hope that everything would be all right, even if we won’t be there to watch it anymore. after all, jesse and celine have accepted there would be no other true love like theirs in this lifetime, despite all its imperfections. but for a movie series whose endings always kept us wondering what comes next, it fits just as well with the first parts. on a personal note, i’m happy to have finished this iconic series with my best friend. sian’s always thanked me for my company as we went through the movies, but i’m really just glad to be.
