iI don't remember exactly when I first watched this, but I know I've never felt more connected to a show.
Growing up, I moved from Penang to Negeri Sembilan, then the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and finally found my footing in Kuala Lumpur. Living in so many places gave me the chance to meet all kinds of people and personalities, but it also left me with this lingering feeling of never truly belonging. Being biracial didn't exactly make that any easier.
This show captures that feeling and somehow goes even deeper.
I think I was 18 when I first saw it. Still lost. Still trying to figure out where I belonged. Still completely clueless. Watching it made me realize that, as much as I want to scream a big "fuck you" to the world sometimes, I'm also eternally grateful for the life I had. My upbringing gave me the chance to experience different cultures, perspectives, and people, and ultimately brought me closer to the things I genuinely love.
Maybe belonging was never about finding a place. Maybe it was about finding myself.
