another piece by Metallica that criticizes war, just like 'one'. In the pre Chorus it is described how a 21-year old soldier Boy is now just an empty shell. "Twenty one, only son, but he served us well" shows just how our governments, unfortunately, think about human lifes- disposable. "Bred to kill, not to care, do just as we say" perfectly sums up how soldiers are drilled. "Finished here, greetings, death, he's yours to take away" shows, just how the first line of the pre Chorus, how disposable Soldiers, and human lifes in that matter, are for our government. The chorus
"Back to the front
You will do what I say, when I say
Back to the front
You will die when I say, you must die
Back to the front
You coward, you servant, you blind man"
The Chorus just got to me because I Imagined said 21-year old (the one from the pre Chorus) being send back to the front again and again. The third verse is written in the soldiers point of view:
"Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
Had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
Left to die with only friend, alone, I clench my gun"
just shows how depressing and traumatizing a war is. It isn't something that deserves glory-it deserves criticism, it destroys homes and people. Men and women that go to war often don't come back as the same person. That is almost guaranteed. It also is guaranteed, that people die, homes and families get destroyed. Why do our governments continue fighting pointless wars? In the book 'All quiet on the western front' (original Title: "Im Westen nichts neues") one character, I can't remember his name, says, that the leaders of a country should go and have a boxing match. The leader that wins, wins the war. That way no innocent people get killed and the politicians think about war in a different light; because now it's them that get hurt. If you read my rant till this point I'd like to thank you. If you enjoy metal then please give the song a try.
