so i re-read the book in russian - mostly just to refresh my memory and get some practice in the language. honnêtement, i still feel the exact same way i did when i first read it. i really loved the realistic, oppressive atmosphere of the book, but i didn't love how orwell handled the main themes: the relationship between man and god, faith and doubt. i mean, don't get me wrong, he did touch on them, un peu. but it wasn't enough for me. that said, i'm not gonna drag george too hard for this one. it's one of his early novels, and even he wasn't happy with it in the end. would i recommend it ? sure, if you're curious about what life is like for people living on the streets, or priests' daughters for that matter. how hard and sad it all is🤷♀️
The novel also explores the role of religion and charitable giving. Dorothy questions her religious beliefs throughout the novel, concluding that there is "no possible substitute for faith; no pagan acceptance of life as sufficient to itself; no pantheistic cheer-up stuff, no pseudo-religion of 'progress' with visions of glittering Utopias and ant-heaps of steel and concrete. It was all or nothing. Either life on earth is a preparation for something greater and more lasting, or it is meaningless, dark and dreadful
