I never really got the hype around Keigo Higashino’s works, so I figured I’d start by checking out his movies first, especially since one of them is currently available for free online through JFF Theater. The beginning was kinda boring, and I was honestly wondering why everything felt so fast paced in the end. Turns out, this is actually a continuation of another movie. But somewhere around the middle, I finally got the charm and started seeing what all the fun was about. It’s one of those Japanese murder mysteries that somehow blends mystery, thriller, drama, and science into one surprisingly smooth package. Like, imagine a marine conservation vs. development conflict mixed with a murder mystery, a dark family secret, and a complicated love quadrangle. Sounds messy as hell, right? Somehow, this movie manages to juggle all of that pretty well. The pacing is definitely slow at first, but once it gets going, it flies by and becomes genuinely entertaining toward the end. I also really liked how Keigo unfolds the mystery: never too rushed, letting the pieces fall into place at their own pace. Now I’m kinda curious to finally pick up one of his books, especially considering how loved his works are among readers in Indonesia.
