disclosure: I read the Polish translation of the book It's absolutely awful. The amount of repetitions is staggering and some translation issues are borderline absurd. I really wanted and tried my best to like the plot, the story has potential, but the execution hammered every nail in its coffin. There are too many characters and way too many time shifts, and while these methods of storytelling are not bad tools whatsoever, here they're used in a very chaotic way, rendering the story even more confusing. There is a crime (and every chapter will remind you exactly what happened and how bad it was) but there is no motive. The villain is simply a BadGuyThatAlsoHasSomeChildhoodTrauma™, there is no reason to his actions and we spend so little time with him that even if he did have a relatively solid motive or ideals, there's no peep about all that (but you know exactly what beer every character is drinking and their shoe size).
