Watched this after the hype had already died down a bit because I wanted to enjoy it in a quieter theater. Honestly, at first I wasn’t even interested because I thought this was some kind of anime or K-drama adaptation😭 turns out it’s completely original so my bad lol. But honestly, huge respect for how long this movie managed to stay in theaters. Jokan really is one of the few Indonesian directors who has built such a loyal fanbase, people will show up for his movies whether it’s his strongest genre (horror) or something outside his comfort zone like "Ghost in the Cell" itself, which mixes horror with comedy, or more specifically black comedy + social satire aimed at our government. Blending two genres that clash this much is honestly really hard, so the fact that this movie still feels enjoyable and easy to follow deserves appreciation. But while watching, I kept feeling like something was missing?? The story starts and ends with so many things we barely know anything about, both before and after the events of the film. Totally agree with people saying this should’ve been turned into a series instead. Biggest props go to the production design and special effects. The gore isn’t perfect or super realistic, but it’s still really satisfying to look at on screen. And apparently some of the props/statues from this movie were turned into an art installation at a museum??? And it's well deserved. They looked insanely beautiful. At some point it almost feels like the movie’s main purpose was to showcase those art pieces… and I’m not gonna be mad because they looked hella good. This movie roasts the government so hard and in this economy, a lot of the people’s frustrations and wishes toward the state are basically represented here, so it’s not surprising at all that this became so popular. Once again, props to Bang Jokan, please consider turning this into a series!!
