this one's only getting a lower rating because i fucking hate tsunami 💀 but the writing is great in this one too, and i love how much depth the book adds to tsunami's character and the family dynamics we see in this book. spoilers ahead! so the main theme of this one definitely feels like arrogance... it's just a thing i associate with tsunami's character as well, the bossy, "you need to listen to me because i am authority" type thing. another theme i feel like duty/responsibility of choice, not of necessity. tsunami chose to take on the responsibility of protecting the last female egg (auklet) because she *wanted* to, not because someone asked her too. at the end, she was loyal to her friends not because she felt like she owed it to them, but because she realised that that was where she belonged. the themes of guilt in this one go so hard too... like when tsunami realises that the seawing she killed in the arena was her own father, droven into insanity by queen scarlet. her actions in the book also feel like a direct contrast to how clay was in the previous book. while clay focused on not killing anyone, tsunami recklessly attacked anyone she saw as a threat in this book. I like how from both points of view there was a downfall. clay's unwillingness to fight/cause conflict made him trust in peril, who ultimately betrayed them; whereas tsunami's approach made HER untrustworthy to any other dragons, even to her own mother iirc. balance is key after all. wings of fire is a depressing read sometimes...and the scene where tsunami waits for the assassin in the hatchery? chills. and that's it for this review~~
