The intertwining of these characters, slowly pouring out the emotions buried within them, is the beauty of individualism in cinema. A painter, a photographer, a woman recording her life through tapes, and a dhobi, together they show both the best and worst sides of Mumbai through their own experiences. The way a dhobi’s life changes after meeting a photographer, and how a painter gets emotionally affected by the video tapes of a married Muslim woman documenting her lonely life in Mumbai, is such a unique way of portraying human connection. A character being emotionally shaped by someone who only exists through recorded tapes feels strangely intimate and unique at the same time. The documentary-like filmmaking style makes it even more engaging. We observe the lifestyles of all four individuals and how each of them understands the same surroundings differently, for some, Mumbai becomes comforting; for others, challenging and isolating. The film is not trying to tell you who is right or wrong, or who deserves blame. It’s simply a journey through the expectations of four people and what Mumbai ultimately gives back to them.
