today's beautiful and colorful bird is the wompoo fruit dove! the head and nape are pale gray mixed with bright green. the throat, front of the neck, and breast are dark purple. the back is this color, sometimes with dull yellow spots. the emerald green wings have a golden-yellow band, a color also found on the belly, flanks, and underwing coverts. the tail is bright emerald green. the irises are reddish-orange, the bill is orange-red with a greenish-yellow tip, and the legs are greenish-yellow. this species primarily inhabits large expanses of tropical and subtropical rainforests composed of evergreen trees. these wooded areas often include selective logging zones, regenerating stands, and, to a lesser extent, monsoon forests, gallery forests, and open woodlands. in australia, this bird frequents mainly the canopy and upper levels of the treetops, while in new guinea, it is much more commonly found in the subcanopy and lower vegetation layers. although magnificent fruit bats also consume buds, these birds are almost exclusively frugivorous, consuming more than 50 kinds of fruit distributed across 32 families.
