This review is deeply personal to me. This book felt like a warm hug, a quiet comfort I didn’t know I needed. I lost my dad on December 24, 2024. Like Lenny, I was with him from the moment he was diagnosed. I stayed by his side through hospital admissions, check-ups, chemotherapy and everything. The year I graduated, I chose not to work so I could be with him. Losing him felt like losing a part of myself that will never come back. During that time (until right now), the only things that kept me sane were my books and the shows I watched just to feel alive. I spent most of my time with kids, like Lenny did, because they were the only ones I could face without falling apart. It truly was a whirlwind — navigating grief, searching for a path back to life, trying to figure out where to begin again. Waking up numb or sad every day was the hardest part. One day you feel joy and then later you will just break apart, random crying while watching comedy shows, eating and anything you usually do. I’m slowly getting better. Talking with my siblings has helped me the most, though I know I still have a long way to go before I can fully accept everything and find a job that sparks life in me again. I hope everyone has their own Miles — someone who can pull them out from the darkest places. For me, that’s my siblings. This book might not be for everyone, but it felt like it was written for someone like me. I genuinely felt like I was reading pieces of my own life in Lenny’s story, not every detail, but enough to feel understood.
