the context in this phrase was about nirvana (the band). charlie and his friends were discussing a magazine charlie saw that talks about how nirvana was being compared to john lennon. one of charlie's friends mentioned that everyone keeps on comparing everyone with each other nowadays which ruins ones identity or sense of self. how it discredits them. i often notice myself comparing the people i meet with people i know or have known my entire life. ever since i transferred schools, finding friends hasnt really been an issue with me. finding a sense of belonging is a bit of a pickle though. when i read this phrase, i remembered my close group of friends. lets call them 4t2p. 4t2p wasnt the first group i became a part of and i wasnt fond of them at first. but they set the standard for me when it comes to finding kind and uplifting spirits. we never had any common interests we bonded over, we simply hung out with each other and overtime, i realized that these are my people. a group of people that accepted me despite my differences and oddity when i was still trying to recognize who and what kind of person i was. the people that helped me recognize and find out who i really am. they didnt build me, or mold me, or shaped me into this kind of person that fits in their "category" or "standard" cus there was never a standard in the first place. they let me find out who i am myself and made sure to be there the whole time. and theyver been there — they are here. is the reason why theyre so special is because theres no one to compare them with? i think the reason why theyre special is because the amount of love and joy they have made me feel has no limit. i dont think its about comparing. i do admit, i do compare them with the people i meet a lot. i try to find similarities they have with strangers i meet because i think it would help me find a sense of belonging i had in my previous school, but i should break that habit since they are their own people. im not trying to find replacements or anything but maybe instead of trying to look for a familiar feeling, maybe i should uncover a new one. something my grandma told me a few days ago; i was in a call with her talking about school and all and she casually mentioned how im going to meet a lot of people but the ones i met in highschool (4t2p) would have the kind of bond no one else would be able to achieve. is the reason why you grow attach with the people you first meet is because there arent any other people like them or the rest are only resemblances of them?
The reason they were so big is that they didn't have anyone to compare themselves with, so the sky was the limit.
