I’m seeing myself in Olivia Rodrigo’s latest songs and I don’t like it. I’ll be honest and say I didn’t like this song that much when I first listened to it. I was expecting to feel the same thrill when I first listened to Drop Dead (which I loved upon first listen, but I’ll review that on another post), but the first few gloomy notes and atmosphere of the song deterred me a little from listening. After a second listen and actually understanding the lyrics, I began to appreciate it more. Unfortunately for me, it was because I resonated with the song a little too much. I interpreted this song as someone who has come to find love but has yet to fully heal and love themself. It’s finding someone who is finally good for you and good to you but realizing that the problem is now yourself. It’s realizing that no matter how much reassurance and care the person can give you, you just can’t seem to get out of the prison that is your head, something you thought you’d be free from once you finally find someone so genuine and so good to you. How timely it is for her to release this when I, too, have finally found good love and yet cannot seem to fully reciprocate it because of the voices in my head :’)
