for as long as i can remember, ”man” was a synonym for ”villain.” in the architecture of my mind, they held the title of the cruelest architects of pain, each executing their malice in different, devastating ways. for me, that malice wore the face of abandonment. it was a father choosing to walk away, choosing someone else, leaving behind a child who had no choice but to conclude that men are simply engineered to be broken, reckless, and cruel. it felt like an absolute, unshakeable law of the universe. then, i watched Hope. when the film started, my armor was fully intact. i saw the familiar monster in the dark. i waited for the world to prove me right again... that men only exist to ruin things. and then, the aftermath stretched out on screen. i watched a father trying, and failing, to step into the shattered pieces of his daughter’s world. because of the monster who broke her, she saw a monster in every man. even the one who gave her life. i understood her trauma. i recognized that defensive recoil. but as i watched him, the calculus of my anger began to glitch. there was no malice in his eyes. there was only a devastating, helpless sincerity. when he realized his own face, his own voice, and his very existence caused her pain, he didn’t walk away. he didn’t abandon her because it was too hard. instead, he erased himself. he hid inside a suffocating, ridiculous Kokomong suit just to be near her. he became a cartoon character just so his daughter could feel safe enough to breathe. sitting there in the dark, my absolute truth split right down the middle. grief didn’t leave me, but it changed shape. there is still the burning, rightful anger toward the monsters, the reckless, irresponsible cowards who leave scars and walk away. but now, sitting right next to that anger, is a quiet, aching realization: there are also men who will suffocatingly hold their breath, break their own hearts, and wear a clown’s suit just to protect the piece of the world they love.
