Synopsis : Dorian Gray, a young seductive dandy, made a foolish wish : to always keep the radiance of his beauty, while his portrait would bear the burden of his passions and sins. And, in fact, only the painting reflecting Dorian’s black soul ages. My short review : i absolutely loved this book! this is the first book ive read in a while and im glad i chose to read this one. i learnt a lot of new words (wich i will write after this short review). when it was published in 1890, the book was considered immoral. yet its singularity is to be a realist novel and an aesthete’s novel - both fascinating, with a strangeness that touches on the fantastic. Vocabulary, english : • Placid : not easily upset or excited. • Voluptuousness : the quality of being soft, curved, and sexually attractive. • Reminiscence : mental image remembered from the past. • Obsolescence : process of becoming outdated or unused. • Vanity : excessive pride in one's appearance or achievements. • Haggard : who has a wild and fierce expression. • Episodic : containing or consisting of a series of separate parts or events. Vocabulary, french : • Placide : qui est doux et calme. • Volupté : vif plaisir des sens (surtout plaisir sexuel). • Réminiscence : retour à l'esprit d'un souvenir non identifié comme tel. • Vanité : satisfaction de soi-même, sentiment d'orgueil. • Hagard : qui a une expression égarée et farouche. • Épisodique : qualifie un texte ou une narration de divisé en épisodes ou composé d'épisodes. (i did what i could to write correct definitions of the words, feel free to tell me if one is incorrect!).
