👥 Recommended for readers who enjoy: * WWII stories told from the perspective of ordinary Germans * characters who love reading, writing, and the power of words * unconventional narration, especially stories narrated by Death 🔖 Premise Narrated by Death itself, The Book Thief follows a poor German girl from the years leading up to WWII through 1943. After witnessing her younger brother die from poverty, she is sent away by her mother to live with a modest foster family. Though still surrounded by hardship, she develops a deep love for words and books—earning the nickname “the Book Thief.” As she grows up, the story depicts daily life for ordinary Germans living under Hitler’s regime, until the world she knows is ultimately destroyed by war. (spoilers ahead) ———————————————————— 👍🏻 Liked ✨ Refreshing WWII Perspective The novel focuses on the ordinary, poor Germans: - Food was rationed, and many were forced into Nazi organizations or military service. - Some civilians tried to help Jews in small, risky ways—hiding them or secretly throwing bread to prisoners being marched to concentration camps - Families hid in basements during air raids as bombs fell from the sky. - Children were compelled to join Hitler Youth camps. The frequent use of German words and forms of address reinforces that this is a German perspective. While effective at first, it became slightly distracting over time. 👎🏻 Disliked ✨ Writing Style * The narrator often reveals major plot points far too early, which drained emotional impact from later scenes. * Some sections felt unnecessarily long and dull, while other crucial moments lacked sufficient detail. * Dialogue often felt stiff and unnatural, almost like a poor translation. ✨ Flat Characterization * Given the length of the novel, many characters felt underdeveloped. * I found it difficult to truly care about or feel attached to them. * This felt especially ironic considering the author has said in an interview that he hoped readers would never forget these characters. 📌 Overall Ultimately, this was a disappointing read for me. The premise and German civilian perspective during WWII had enormous potential, but the execution fell short. I can’t help wondering whether the book might work better in translation. Perhaps a well-done Chinese version could smooth out some of the writing issues.
