Reading "No Longer Human" with no idea of what it entails really tested my understanding of what it meant to be human. I agree with some people that the writing can be all over the place but the things that occured in the novel are somewhat universal but, at the same time, not. Isn't that weird? One can relate, but also not. I have not experienced what the main character experienced, but the emotions, especially the feeling of dread, are things I have felt in some extent. I think that the way the main character wrote about his experience felt so unpolished, and it draws me to finish the book. It is so imperfect that I resonated with the ebb and flows of emotions. It shows the humanity in the inhumaness of the main character and no matter how he expressed his disconnect from humanity, it made me see his humanness.
People also talk of a "criminal consciousness." All my life in this world of human beings I have been tortured by such a consciousness, but it has been my faithful companion, like a wife in poverty, and together, just the two of us, we have indulged in our forlorn pleasures.
