In 1987, as martial law ends in Taiwan, Jia-han and Birdy fall in love amid family pressure, homophobia and social stigma. My review: I did tear up a bit at the phonebooth scene. I think this movie perfectly captures the experiences of the LGBT relationships in the 1980s where you couldn't express yourself freely without getting beaten up. This is going to be a hot take but I wasn't a fan of the pacing (I don't know how to explain it properly) I still can't get over the fact that this is a true story based on the director's life and what we saw when Birdy and Jia-chan (now adults) reunited never actually happened. It was something the director wished would have happened but didn't.
Is your love bigger than the love I give? What's the difference between your love and mine? Don't all homosexuals deserve to go to hell? Maybe more people would understand me in hell.
