I really love films that don’t just inspire, but also kinda educate you along the way without feeling preachy. The fact that this is based on a true story about someone with Tourette syndrome, named John Davidson, makes it even more impactful. At first, I kept wondering what actually happened to him, like getting it at 15 yo is honestly tough, especially when he had a normal life before that. As the story goes on, the character development really hits, and Robert Aramayo plays it with so much grit that it made me see Tourette’s in a different light (also shoutout to Scott Ellis who plays young John). It also made me realize that people around us might be dealing with the same thing, we just don’t notice or understand it enough. The issue isn’t the condition itself, it’s the lack of awareness that makes people misunderstand things like sudden outbursts swear or involuntary movements, I Swear. Some parts of what happens to him felt kinda strange or even funny to me at first, but I grew to accept it as the story went on. It actually adds to the charm in a way, like a hidden gem that brings a kind of honesty without ever feeling offensive. Really really inspiring. Lowkey hope we all get to meet people like Dottie and Murray too in our lives.
