I went into "The Bride!" expecting something closer to a classic Bride of Frankenstein retelling that I know, especially since "Frankenstein" from Netflix dropped not too long ago. But this is actually a completely different beast. The story takes a sharp turn by injecting modern, almost trend-chasing themes into a period setting, which makes it feel intentionally chaotic. It’s actually good, like genuinely compelling, but somewhere in the middle I feels unsure of it. The narrative is clear enough, yet it juggles so many elements: politics, women’s liberation, revolution, toxic romance, grotesque love, gangsters, thuggery, rebellion, musical, art, poetry, medical, and many more general madness. At times it feels overambitious, like it’s trying to say everything at once. Maybe it just didn’t fully land for me because I wasn’t expecting something this dense (and okay…maybe I was a little bit sleepy). That opening scene was insanely powerful tho. What a moment for Jessie Buckley. As stacked as the cast is: with names like Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, and Jake Gyllenhaal, your eyes naturally gravitate toward Jessie. She’s feral, magnetic, and completely unpredictable. The range of expressions she pulls off here is unreal. Releasing this right before Oscar feels good, and honestly it just strengthens her case for Best Actress nomination there. A top-tier performance by Mrs. Buckley ayeee
