Kudos to Pixar for bringing a fresh extraterrestrial themed animation movie that doesn’t feel like they’re milking the Buzz Lightyear character/theme from "Toy Story". Even tho the concept feels a bit late for now (since stories about aliens aren’t exactly groundbreaking anymore), this probably would’ve hit way bigger if it came out years ago. Overall, it’s pretty good. It has most of the ingredients of a solid animated movie, which probably explains the Oscar nomination. The animation looks smooth and polished, the characters are interesting, the plot is simple and kid-friendly, and it highlights a family dynamic we rarely see in animated films: an aunt and her nephew. Of course, there’s also a sweet message at the core. That said, I kind of get why it didn’t become super popular. The beginning drags a little and feels a bit boring. Maybe Pixar’s golden era really is behind them. Still, I enjoyed it, and 3 stars feels fair.
