I’ve been a bit lazy with movies lately, mostly because works been busy and I’ve been deep into a series. I wanted something light and short, so I ended up watching this. At first I was a little hesitant since the animation style looked kind of amateurish??? but then I realized it’s an Oscar nominee and produced by Natalie Portman… so why not? The Oscars are tomorrow anw. "Arco" is a charming little animation. It’s directed by a French illustrator who lives in Guatemala, and it imagines a possible world a few decades from now shaped by the technology we already have today. In this future, robots dominate many aspects of human life, and the film even hints that someday they might end up being more 'human' than humans themselves. Interestingly, the robots named Mikki are also the most compelling characters here, and arguably the most ideal parental figures. At first the animation style didn’t completely click with me, but over time I actually started to like it the more I got used to it. It has this look that feels like American/European classic comics coming to life. That visual style, paired with the film’s futuristic theme... which almost feels like a contrast to the hand-drawn aesthetic, gives the animation its own unique charm and really makes its colors and atmosphere stand out. The movie is touching and visually beautiful without trying too hard. Some artistic choices are presented in unusual ways, but I do think they can still resonate with younger audiences aka kids. The futuristic concept feels well researched, although the story itself moves a bit too quickly. The relationship between the two main characters develops so fast that it feels slightly odd... maybe a budget limitation? Who knows. Still, the central idea is strong: it paints a future shaped by technology that clearly wasn’t fully thought through, subtly reminding us why we might not want technology to completely take over our lives. Anyway heres hoping this rainbow wins the Oscar tomorrow🤞🏻🌈
