It’s kinda messy, there are a lot of things packed into this 115-minute comedy-drama-political film, so the plot feels all over the place and keeps overlapping in a confusing way for me. It’s marketed heavy as a political comedy, but most of the jokes land pretty flat (and that decision with 'the narrator' doesn't really help either). Like I’m not even chuckling, just barely smiling. And also, some of the dialogue feels cringey and kinda shallow in some scenes. It’s a shame because this comes from a major studio with a such a big names (woody, jamie, kumail, ayo cmonnn), but it never really maximizes its potential. Maybe I’m just not that familiar with the director’s style or filmography idk. One thing I did like though is the 90s vibe, it’s actually pretty strong here. But at the same time, it weirdly feels like a film made in the wrong era. Also… what’s going on with the styling? Why does everyone look like they’re wearing bad wigs😭😭 The setting is still believable, and Emma Mackey shows a decent emotional range here. But yeah, it’s unfortunate that her recent projects haven’t really hit…this is like the third one that feels underwhelming to me. Hopefully her upcoming collab with Greta Gerwig on the Narnia adaptation finally does her justice. Still adore her tho!!
