I’d somehow never really known much about "Wuthering Heights" before this, even though it’s been adapted a million times. All I ever heard was that it’s either 'really good' or 'really tragic', with people seeming to either love it or hate it. So I went in with pretty low expectations, and yeah…I think I ended up somewhere in the middle. The story follows Catherine, a wealthy aristocrat who ends up falling for Heathcliff, the servant in her household. Their relationship is messy and complicated (tbh I’m not even sure I’d call it as love relationship), and it constantly feels like the world is working against them. I won’t say much more because the rest kind of unfolds in a way that’s better experienced blind (or it's gonna be a spoiler). From a visual standpoint, it’s absolutely gorgeous all the way through. The costumes are especially impressive, and every gown Catherine wears looks amazing && so haute couture. But for some reason, the performances and chemistry between the two leads didn’t really click for me. They’re both obviously attractive, but the connection felt a bit forced and oddly lifeless. I actually found some of the side characters like Isabella and Nelly more interesting to watch. One thing that did catch my attention was the modern pop soundtrack by Charli xcx in this 18th-century setting. It’s a strange, very anachronistic choice that kept pulling me out of the moment, especially with the house/techno sounds clashing with the period visuals. It was weirdly beautiful in its own way. As the story went on, I kept feeling a little lost about where it was heading. By the time it ended, I was somewhat satisfied, but also left wondering if the whole story felt a bit pointless??? I guess the marketing was right to call it a tragedy rather than a love story huh🤪 2.5 stars feels fair.
