I swear judging by the poster of it (which looks straight out of a Men’s Health or GQ or Esquire or any High Fashion Magz cover shoot), I genuinely thought "Pillion" was going to be about the glamorous life of a male fashion model☠️ lol. Don’t get me wrong tho, Alexander Skarsgård looks insanely good on that poster, and I didn’t even clock that Harry Melling was in it at first (yes, that's Dudley from the "Harry Potter" franchise!! That still blows my mind). Turns out, this film dives into a BDSM relationship between two men... definitely something that might feel unusual or even taboo for a lot of people. It’s about a shy guy who likes to follow instruction and a commanding biker who likes to be in control. You can probably already sense the dynamic. The first 30 minutesa actually feels super uncomfortable for me. I was tense the whole time, half-expecting Colin to snap or intimidate me through the screen. But as the story unfolded, I weirdly settled into their rhythm of the relationship. And honestly, I started to see the tenderness in it. There’s no actual violence between them... it’s a consensual dynamic between two adults, one dominant and one submissive, both fully aware of what they’re signing up for. There’s a lot to unpack in this pretty controversial film, but if there’s one takeaway, it’s about being honest with yourself: not just with your partner, but with your family too. The film hints at an identity struggle, though not in terms of sexual orientation. It’s more about not knowing what you truly want, what feels right, or what’s actually good for you. Maybe living with his parents well into adulthood adds to that confusion. Identity isn’t something you can just reshape to fit expectations. Even when something seems hopeful or 'normal' on the surface, it won’t stick if it’s not authentic. And tbh I get why it ends the way it does. I think Colin really did enjoy being in that position, literally and figuratively. Maybe being the 'pillion' on the back of a motorcycle, surrendering control, is exactly where he feels most himself. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
