"Dead Man's Wire" tells the insane true story of a nationally televised hostage standoff in 1977. A former real estate developer, Tony Kiritsis (played by Bill Skarsgård) kidnaps the mortgage broker he believes screwed him over and literally wires him to a shotgun, demanding a public apology and $5 million in damages. And yes, this actually happened in Indianapolis, USA. This film is so fucking brilliant. The pacing might feel a bit slow at first, but stick with it pls, by the end you’re completely locked in. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching this slow-burn, true-crime heist thriller unfold from start to finish. The tension isn’t loud or chaotic; it creeps under your skin in a weird, uncomfortable way that most thrillers don’t even try to achieve. It feels restrained but explosive at the same time. The cinematography is top-notch and oddly comforting despite the madness happening on screen, it has that gritty vintage aesthetic that makes everything feel real and suffocating. And Bill Skarsgård? Omg. We’re so used to seeing him play literal monsters, but here he’s a different kind of unhinged: a stylish, mustached, vintage psychopath who somehow looks ridiculously beautiful while spiraling into revolutionary chaos, ughhh so handsome!!! By the end of it all, whether you agree with the protagonist (can we even call him protagonist?? Nvm I guess) or not, you can feel the twisted sense of satisfaction he gets from what he did.
