A spiritual film told in a funny way, but still packed with some pretty deep thoughts about life. I honestly don’t come across movies like this very often. "Good Fortune" follows an angel named Gabriel (played by Keanu Reeves... Yup, Keanu 'The Babayaga' Reeves) who’s slowly getting bored and burnt out from his daily angel duties, which somehow include texting and driving lmao. Wanting to do something bigger, he decides to step in and change a life, or maybe save a lost soul. He ends up interfering with two very different people: an Indian man struggling to survive through gig work, and a super-wealthy capitalist drowning in his own to-do list and in desperate need of an assistant. The contrast is funny, a bit dry, and very “about life,” but for some reason it kept catching me off guard and making me laugh. Life really is full of weird twists and turns. The movie is lighthearted but carries a meaningful message underneath. I’m not sure how biblically accurate it is, even though it drops a lot of references like Gabriel, Azrael, and Martha (which lowkey gave me Lionsgate-logo vibes lol). Still, it gets you thinking about life without taking itself too seriously. Be grateful, live with ease, and remember that what we want isn’t always what’s best for us. Just keep doing good, because what goes around comes around, karma always finds its way back, whether good or bad, sooner or later. It’s genuinely a fun watch, but don’t take it too seriously. Although it's essentially about religion, just take it easy. Because where else can we see Keanu Reeves saying “I’m a big boy,” loving “chicken nuggies,” and surfing for a photo of a “baby elephant” on the internet? He’s such a bad boy with a soft touch, even though I still can’t shake his scary image hahaha, at least he tried. In the end, I hope this new year brings me good fortune, just like this film brought me a good time. Amen.
