"Uncut Gems" is totally my kind of 'hidden gem' (yeah yeah, I’m very late to the party). This movie is loud as hell from start to finish hahaha, pure chaos, and honestly that’s exactly why I love it. No surprise, since "Anora" is one of my all-time favorites too. The story follows Howard, a jewelry dealer/businessman who’s betting everything on selling this one rare gemstone he got from Ethiopia, risking his entire life just to land the right price for it that can benefit him. On top of that, he’s juggling his family, his mistress, his debts, and a whole lot of other messy, stressful shit. The man Howie is built on ambition: reckless, stubborn, never backing down. If there’s one thing to learn from Howard, it’s that he absolutely refuses to settle for less, even when he really, really should. The film also shows how brutal life can be in the US, especially NYC. Making money there isn’t easy: you need brains, guts, and probably a bit of insanity. Adam Sandler absolutely kills it here. No notes. His emotional range is insane, and somehow the movie makes you both root for him and hate his guts at the same time. My one small nitpick is the ending. Haduhhhhhhh. We’re all rooting for him, obviously, but yeah… realistically? Dude is annoying & reckless as hell, so I guess he kinda got what he deserved. Still, this is a straight-up banger from A24. A movie I can rewatch over and over and over again, and every time I’ll notice another 'hidden gem' that actually means something (even if it’s not extraterrestrially uncut).
