A surprisingly unique watch, especially if you’re not usually into musicals (I’m not either). Despite the title, "Kiss of the Spider Woman" isn’t really telling about a literal 'spider woman' (that part functions more as a fantasy layer woven into the real story). The film follows two very different cellmates in an Argentine prison during dirty war era: Luis Molina, an effeminate gay dresser, and Valentín Arregui, a hardened-straight Marxist revolutionary. They slowly form an unlikely bond as Molina retells classic films to pass the time, including a musical about a deadly 'spider woman,' while secretly spying for the warden in hopes of parole. The mix of politics (Argentina regime), love, betrayal, and care gives their complex relationship real emotional weight. The movie does feel a bit long and drags in the middle, but that pacing might be necessary to fully connect the prison reality with the musical fantasy they tells. The songs are mostly great with some spicy eye-catching choreography, and JLo does a pretty good job alongside the two actor leads. In the end, 'spider woman' becomes a form of cinematic art about how storytelling and human connection can become a lifeline: even in the most brutal circumstances.
