This is so beautiful. Everything that comes out of Lorenz Hart’s mouth sounds beautiful. Everything that Linklater puts on screen becomes beautiful: and this film is no exception. "Blue Moon" follows legendary american broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart on one rough night at Sardi’s bar, as he sits with his crumbling self-confidence while his former partner, Richard 'Dick' Rodgers, celebrates massive success on the opening night of 'Oklahoma!' (yes, with the exclamation point). It all takes place in one location, but the dialogue is so sharp and alive that it never feels limiting, which makes sense for a movie centered on a musical lyricist. The film doesn’t try to summarize Hart’s entire life. It stays completely in the moment, just letting us sit with him, and that very present approach feels very Linklater. There’s this quiet attempt to accept life as it is, seen through the artistic, melancholic lens of someone who processes everything through words and lyrics. Hart approaches love, regret, and longing with theatrical sadness, but never in an over-the-top way, even when he opens up to someone he adores. I’ll admit, I underestimated this at first, mostly because I barely knew this movie existed (the marketing really did nothing lol). Ethan Hawke’s name was what pulled me in, and well he absolutely delivers. This feels like a 100-minute one-man performance: nonstop dialogue, no awkward beats, no slip-ups, and a character who never once feels like "Ethan Hawke being Ethan Hawke.” Genuinely incredible work, and yeah an Oscar nomination would’ve been very deserved.
