I’m not really an F1 person, but for some reason this movie was super exciting and genuinely made me curious about the race. The thunderous score by Hans Zimmer is doing a LOT of heavy lifting here (like, 80% of every scene), so yeah, this is absolutely best enjoyed in IMAX. Brad Pitt is a legend, no question, but the real standout for me was Damson. He comes in with so much presence that he basically becomes Pitt’s equal. I was low-key annoyed by him at first, but that quickly turned into admiration later. Same goes for the supporting cast, Javier Bardem and Kerry Condon were great. The balance between racing and drama felt just right, making the whole thing a really solid formula for a movie. My main issue is the beginning and the ending, they felt disconnected from the rest of the movie, like they belonged to a slightly different movie, which hurt the overall cohesion. As for Oscars: Best Picture? It wouldn’t shock me if it gets a nomination since blockbusters movie usually get a spot, and this was definitely one of the better ones last year (one of, not overall best). But winning (or even landing in the top five), feels like a stretch. I also get why some people would be annoyed if it starts picking up major awards. Best Score, tho? Totally possible. It’s Hans Zimmer, and the soundtrack goes hard.
