this is also something i read for my creative writing class, it was apart of our poetry unit! WOW!!!! loved the care and thought that was put into these poems and the translations. my book ended up getting stuck in the mail and my local library only had audiobook format so i was really struggling to write down the poems i liked 😔😔 although- hearing the way the poems were spoken, which were read aloud by olivarez himself, really changes your interpretation and you can see the care that he puts into each one of his poems. this book has english on one side, and when flipped there are spanish translations translated by a translator written for olivarez’ parents. the poems range from deep writing of identity and history to poetry of love and care for family and friends, which is SO SWEET to see among men. UGH i gotta find the poem i read in class using someone’s physical copy bc i can’t remember it edit; there are youtube videos of his poems!! HALLELUJAH!!!!
Tonight the stars are hidden by the brash lights of the city, and I want to say my friends can see my softness through all the jokes I crack, But maybe I don’t need the stars to be tender.
