I really liked the book and I understand why it's such a classic. first of all I don't sympathize with Baba segi when he found out about his wives deception and his fertility status in an environment when women are prized by how many children (especially male children) they can have they'll eventually do anything to move to a better place in the totem pole. Then there was the misogyny that went on in the book and this is what really made me hate baba segi's character. The way he ridicules his 4th wife Bolanle from being childless, the way he enables his domestic staff Taju the coward to sexually harass his wife and the language he uses to talk about women and his wives are disgusting. He has that all too familiar patriarchal mind that men of his generation and some in ours even have. What also made him disgusting to me( at least just me) was him being controlled by his digestive system. Ew Iya femi to me was one of the most interesting wives. Her backstory is the most tragic I felt for her and i loved when sought for revenge and burnt the house down but she's the exact type of Christian that I hate the most ones that use their belief in Christ to justify their evil. She's the most evil in the house and she basks in it because she believes she's doing God's work and believes that God is on her side simply because she worships him. She's quiet literally Satan who uses Bible verses and covers his evil with good even when she poisons and innocent girl she feels no remorse about it, Although she does all of that she's the most entertaining to read. Iya segi is also interesting to read as she had no interest in men and was forced to be with Baba segi because of her mother giving him all her money with her consent. she sees baba segi as her investment, her living, breathing and talking money bag and she will not let go of him because she will not let go of her money if was as simple as that, I've seen women like that who have invested too much time, energy and money into a relationship so they'll never let it go even if they are abused and tired. Iya Tope is a woman who lives in the air she seems to be the simple minded type and her backstory shows her this way. I didn't like her before but seeing her actually get a backbone towards the end was relieving. I also feel that the reason why she was so shut up in the house too is not only because of her lack of backbone but also because she has only female daughters (just a theory though) I expected more from Bolanle tbh don't get me wrong I felt very bad for her but I could not just immerse myself in her and her reasoning. Her marrying baba segi was the worst mistake of her life but at least she was the one who uncovered the truth. I can go on and on about the characters and themes but I'm already so tired. It's a good read and I will definitely watch the movie
