Our Indian Ghost Rider - Karuppaaaa. Karuppu (2026), directed by RJ Balaji, is about the deity Vettai Karuppu, who takes the guise of a lawyer to fight a corrupt legal system and deliver justice. It’s a typical commercial Tamil entertainer. From the trailer, I honestly didn’t expect the story to be this simple. I wouldn’t call it boring, because Suriya has the screen presence and charisma to carry a film, but the 2-hour-30-minute-plus runtime definitely felt like a drag. The songs were good, though. I actually liked Retro more than this. Retro felt like a stylized entertainer, whereas Karuppu plays things much more conventionally. Most of the VFX scenes were weak and easily recognizable as CGI. The Leo reference also felt unnecessary. It seemed like it was included just to hype up the audience. I never expected a Suriya film to rely on references to another movie. Maybe it was a gift to Trisha. But anyway, 2 hours and 32 minutes was a stretch.
