I feel Koreans are far ahead when it comes to filmmaking. They're so good at what they do that they often blur the line between fiction and reality. The Wailing (2016), directed by Na Hong-jin, is about a mysterious Japanese outsider who arrives in a small village. Soon after his arrival, a strange sickness begins to spread, and a police officer sets out to uncover the truth before it's too late to save his daughter. It's a simple story, but the way the screenplay is structured, along with the editing, turns it into a unique masterpiece. It perfectly demonstrates how a story can be manipulated to stay gripping and entertaining until the very end. The performances are another standout. Korean actors have an incredible sense of realism, they don't just play their characters, they become them. It genuinely feels like you're watching real people rather than actors. The child actor, in particular, did an exceptional job. I truly admire movies that keep me thinking long after they're over, about the characters, the atmosphere, and what could have been done differently to undo what had already happened. Great movie. 🙌🏼🔥
