the kind of movie that you watch and go “that was a good courtroom drama” seemingly without a second thought, then it ear worms into every thought for ages after. the brilliance of it all!!! and I cannot be amazed enough at the title, it’s such an apt description of the movie itself. it starts off as a whodunnit, and it ends up weaving such a convoluted dissection of love, in almost all its forms, and it makes Sandra defend not only herself, but every feeling she had or didn’t have in every scenario by people who don’t know her or her marriage, or have an image of her through her career. and Sandra Hüller herself is INSANEEEEEE. this movie would have crumbled, despite all its glory in its writing, under a lesser actor. she’s insane. Milo Machado-Graner blows it all out the water too,, everything is just so so so real. A child already forced to come to terms with one thing, that very thing also dissected and implied to be one of the catalysts for your parents’s decaying relationship that you’re finding out was more rose tinted than you thought, and witnessing every gnarly detail that comes out with that. The way that all comes together for him, the things he chooses to do, his own evaluation of his parents within such a short span, the film does it so well. so many more thoughts abt this film I can’t articulate. yeah maybe love is the choices we make and the people we choose to fight with/by and resolve things with. but you’ll be on a 13 hr flight and the first movie you watch is anatomy of a fall and you’ll be real emotional over ur first love and the movie is already such an in depth character evaluation of love and relationships but that last scene in the restaurant will hit you like a damn lorry and you’ll spend the next eight hours genuinely crying over the scene. What The Fuck. I’m gonna jump out this plane brother. DAWG. unfettered gazes and restrained actions. the caresses, the touches. the yearning. I felt like a pervert for even intruding on their moment. I FEEL INSANE. my personal thoughts aside, it’s the break down of every single facet, every imposed “fact” of Sandra’s character onto her during that court trial, the conversation where she feels like every captious eye is on her, including vincent’s, that makes the restaurant scene at the end pay off so well. Despite it all, he decided on her. And she decided on him too. a very bittersweet sort of catharsis at the end, a flame never reignited, and the lines she and Daniel exchange at the end.
