Booksmart is a reminder that life is meant to be lived, as obvious as that realization may be. If you are lucky, there will be someone very special by your side to share those moments. In that case, I can consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world, this film always reminds me how grateful I am to have such special friends by my side. It will always be one of my favorite films, it is innovative, young, funny, striking and has a lot of flexibility in its cinematography. A great reference for all “coming of age” films, I am especially obsessed with the long take in the pool but even more obsessed with ALL the dialogues.

Completamente devastador e real, me emocionei diversas vezes assistindo.

What happens when something so painful passes through generations? What happens when a love that has become sick begins to poison other relationships? Is there a way to heal from disappointments, from unfulfilled desires, from absence? An absence so deep that it corrodes you? What happens when you love someone deeply and hate them at the same time? What happens when the person who brought you into the world, your father or your mother, abandons you in such cruel ways? What do we become with this empty home? Sentimental Value stood before me like a mirror: a family silently sick, deeply wounded to the point where it falls apart. Absence is something so painful that the lack of words to explain it seems to fit perfectly. There is such an immense need for love in the characters of this film that, at some point, I began to feel deeply nauseated. The pain of absence is so rooted in their gazes that it turned my stomach and held me there until the moment when the tears could no longer be contained: “I want a home. I want a home.” The monologue about faith in God is brutally honest. There are moments when the pain is so overwhelming that all that remains is to throw myself on the floor and cry, to beg for that home to return, to beg for a home that is not yet mine. Please love me. Please don’t leave me. What happens when we are willing to ask for forgiveness and to forgive? What happens when we decide to stop staring at such a cruel memory? What happens when we allow the crack to close? There are not enough answers for so many questions, but after watching this film it becomes impossible not to feel that something new, something beautiful and deeply honest, happens when we are willing to move forward.

I waited a long time to finally watch Lord of the rings, and I regret this decision. I wish I’ve watched it sooner, this is a beautiful, well made film adaptation. The universe created by Tolkien is alive in every frame, character, place. It’s just so stunning, it left me breathless for most of it, some scenes made my blood shiver and made my eyes cry. Elijah Wood (my dearest boy) is a lovely hero, I love his character Frodo. He is an innocent person and yet the bravest of them all. This film really made feel in the unique world of Tolkien, now I really want to read the trilogy.

All there was, was silence and tears. That was all it needed of me.

Today I’ve turned 25 years old, damn. To be honest and fair, I did not expected to be in this point of life that I am. When I was 15, I expected to have all figured it out at this point of life, but I am far beyond that. Of course, I’ve accomplished certain things that I’ve desired very much, I’ve graduated in college in the course that I wanted when I was 17 (and made that decision) but I don’t see myself working at this line of work anymore. I don’t like to work in the cinema industry, I actually hate it. But life is more than your job, or the lack of it. I have great friends, a lovely and caring boyfriend, and a nice little family of three ladies, I adore all of them. I dedicate myself to study different languages, I can speak Portuguese, English, French and a little (very little) of Mandarin. I adore to study naval engineering, architecture and a lot of other stuff that I’ve never thought it would make me so happy. When I was 15, I was so unhappy, I hated turning 15. This is why I think I thought that at 25 I would have accomplished things I thought that made one happy: money, marriage, kids. Life is more then that, THANK GOD. I’m not ready for what being 25 will bring to me, but I’m not scared of it anymore.

What happens when is “just us”? When the biggest prayers and worries are about breasts, menstruation, cute boys or, in a more intimate moment, a family in harmony? When everything is so new and so frightening, who do we turn to? If we are “just us” or “just me” if we are being honest, will that be enough? Are you there God? It is such a beautiful and moving film, such an innocent portrait of growing up as a girl. The friends who no longer make sense beside us, the boys we are embarrassed to like and the boys we like and later come to hate so strongly, the strangeness of being the first in class to “grown a body”, the search to understand yourself and the search to find yourself (or not) within a religion. “I only feel God when I am alone” But is there anything purer than being alone and saying a prayer? Even when everything seems to be upside down, He will be there for those who believe. In the end, don’t worry so much, Margaret, I have been asking God for my breasts for 13 years, sooner or later that prayer will be answered. Otherwise, everything will be alright.

I really love the coming-of-age genre because I feel like I’m still in a transitional moment in my life, but this film always hits my heart in a different way. It’s powerful, honest, and brave in portraying the cruel experience of being a thirteen-year-old girl. I think it captures so precisely what happens to two young girls trying to adjust to this new stage of life (full of personality) who end up in conflict because of a boy. Who hasn’t been there? I definitely have, just minus the Jewish part. The moments when we see Lydia’s embarrassing scenes remind me so much of my own experience. The film isn’t afraid to dive in and show that at thirteen we’re not exactly adults, but we’re also far from feeling like children anymore. Thirteen is a cruel limbo, full of doubts and Barbie haircuts with scissors. But if you have that one special girl by your side, everything becomes a little easier to deal with. The final scene where they hug always moves me deeply. I waited ten years to have the hug of my special girl again, but honestly? I would have waited ten more years if I knew that, in the end, everything would turn out okay. I will always dedicate those good feelings of companionship, identification, and love so strong when we grow up to my special girl. Isinha, eu amo ter vivido os 13 ao teu lado, bem como os 23/24/25 e todas as outras idades que estão a chegar. Você tornou, e torna, a experiência de crescer tão linda. Te amo.

Gosh, how much more will it take for me to be a ship pilot?? (a lot more, like more 3/4 years probably). At least I have my animal crossing ducks when I’m reading and taking notes, but I do miss my arrais’s lessons, not a ship but a boat it’s pretty awesome to navigate too! I am starting to feel like Sosuke and Ponyo tho… kind of awesome.

A beautiful message about hope, bravery and a better future. This beautiful sequel from Lord of the rings did not captivated me at first, it’s a thought job to be as good as the first movie, or in a more ambitious way, better than it. But it did not let me down, the end of this movie is breathtaking and beautiful. It holds an strong message: that after times of hate and violence, the world can heel and become an even better place then it was before all this hatred time. I can’t wait to see how the story of Frodo and the ring ends.

How much violence it takes to stop us from being humans? How much suffer and humiliation kills one’s humanity? There isn’t a right way to act against a man, against a regime, that took your humanity, your dignity, that broke you. I love how all the characters from this movie have so many contrary feelings related to revenge. You could bring a man’s child into this world, the man that took everything from you, and that same man would continue to not have respect or mercy for your life. This movie is a masterpiece against authoritarians and violent regimes, truly left me speechless, I could not look away. This is how you construct rythm in a narrative, it kept me tense from the beginning to the end, especially the end. Really really good.

Bad Habit is a faithfull, and therefore devastating, representation of what it was and still is to be queer. The joy, the fear and the sadness that came from being different in a cruel and yet beautiful world. To be locked in a body that it’s not yours, to be afraid of get out of this meat jail. This coming of age book left me speachless, I think it’s an essential reading to the queer community.
