Weathering with You
영화 / TV
just rewatched it now! i have seen this around the time it was released. my gf haven't watched it so i rewatched it today with her. i used to tell her too that she reminds me of hina, because hina is a sunshine girl, and my gf brings sunshine to my life. a quick rundown of what i love the most in this movie: - the animation. the first thing that caught my attention in this movie was the drawing. so satisfying and realistic, reminds me of power of animation. just come to think of it, disney flopped trying to make a live action pinocchio with a CGI pinocchio and his world, but WWY's animation managed to (visually) deliver a story grounded on a very earthly element (climate). i love the animation in general but i specifically fell in love with how the sunlight, rains, and detail shots were drawn. - the message. i can see few reasons why some will consider WWY a mid one, but to me the animation and message just overrides those stuff. as someone who is very sentimental about the day / sunlight, WWY is definitely like a magnum opus for my love of sun or day as symbolic of hope, amplified by the defy-everything-despite-crisis kind of love. i am the sort of person to remind myself that the world is bigger than me when things are tough, or when i am admiring the act of existing, so seeing a movie about a boy who found meaning in being with someone while being lost and ready to throw everything i.e. reach the sky and choose a girl over drowning tokyo is definitely a treat for me. i believe love is the strongest thing on earth—yes, even in this world where there are so many bad guys—and i loved that it was delivered through such story. that at the end of the day, you really won't have any trouble identifying what is love for you, who do you love, what makes you happy once you learned of it. in jack antonoff and lana del rey's words; when you know, you know. are they reckless and orphans? yes. but not everything that happens in your younger years are mere exploration. it is symbolic that these people found each other in one of the most turbulent times in a youngster's life (15-16). these ages for some kids are mentally turbulent—a lot of questioning—so kids like that definitely know when they find a purpose and love. i know because i was in that kind of hole, too. were they reckless? yes. but again, not everything that happens in turbulent years of your life are meant to fade, and with their situation, it simply will force a vow. i'd feel and act like hodaka too if it was me. kei, a grown up, knew that too! his grief understood what hodaka was trying to do. - the music: the music by radwimps definitely captured the mundane, whimsy, yearning, and intensity of WWY. especially the main theme song, is there still anything that love can do. the sound itself captured the overwhelming feeling of wishing that love is the answer to everything, that it can heal everything. hodaka's monologue in the hotel reflected this well—when you believe in something so much that you pray hard for a good life because you found the life you want, hoping no tragedies and hardships make such living impossible. special mentions: notable characters other than the MCs: kei, natsumi, nagi. kei and natsumi are one of those characters in a story that are simply wholesome and kind. no extraordinary details (except for running a writing firm for some time to make ends meet lmao), they are just that honest and kind. i love characters who are simply kind. i believe kindness or sense of community shouldn't be 'impossible'. on the other hand, i love that nagi's relationship with hina developed. there wasn't much background to nagi's attitude earlier in the story other than they were obviously distanced, but i assume it was an effecr of losing their mother. it was heartwarming that not only hodaka finding hina affected hina's life, but also nagi finding a sense of belonging in the company of his sister and hodaka. him feeling strongly about hina disappearing and raging at hodaka was the climax of his dynamic character. side stories: i love kei's position in WWY. i only realized now that him saving hodaka in the beginning was like a foreshadowing. in literal sense, kei saved hodaka in the incident, and taking him in as far as he can in his home, giving him an opportunity to work and be at home. like what i said, age like this can be so turbulent for some teens, and kei and natsumi's roles were symbolic of how important it is to have a grown up who will believe in you, and understand you—and that more often than not for kids like this, such bonds are found outside families who never listen to their kids. i have been to similar turning points and honestly the people who are not only older than me, but also believed in me, were life-changing for me. once again, reminds me of the mountain goats' song, color in your cheeks. other than the obviously-joke-only punch lines and glances, kei didn't judged hodaka being an orphan, runaway. and provided him with everything he can share with him. even when hodaka fired a gun to shoo him from getting to the gate. which leads me to: other than saving hodaka literally, the depth of kei's grief was what the grown ups around hodaka lacked. did his parents and officers cared about his welfare? yes. but they didn't have kei's grief, which is him not living with his wife anymore. this was very evident on when he loosened up when hodaka broke down with the gun saying he just wants to see hina, making kei realize that hodaka was just trying to do what he will also do if he has a chance to be with his wife again. and lastly, i think he's just that cool because he definitely could have not taken hodaka in, without telling hodaka his own sad stories, but he just did it. side characters and other plot hooks mention: i found it fitting that hina only used (dared to use more) of her powers when she met hodaka; when she met someone who believes in her. sure, at first it was because he gave her the idea to earn from it, but obviously their business mad ethem be fond of each other—hina was as lost as hodaka, and hodaka was the person who made her realize what she loves to do, that she has worth. very symbolic of when we know we are loved, we are inspired to be be authentic and is genuinely happy. i also found it cute that others hired hina for very personal reasons, like the girl's wedding and the granny honoring the death anniversary of her husband. i think it's a good portrayal of how people gets to live more with days, and that people around them have different lives, to the point that they will hire a sunshine girl just to make those mundane or personal moments happen. on the other side, businesses also hired her for more sales or to make sure a successful event. this is a good reminder that weather is political. some of our actions, and especially the elites, do stuff that hugely harms the earth. the earth suffering will quickly be our suffering. and come to think of it, in reality, imagine if it's always raining and there's a sunshine girl that only big people can afford! anyway, there's some implied sexual tensions/humor here, some visually, and i won't be surprised if others were put off by this. i honestly wonder what's the point, but i can take a guess, and maybe it's a reminder that hodaka was young, there's still some innocence in him, and what's important was that he was around trusted adults—nobody exploited his innocence. can be considered a good showing that teaching kids to be respectful of people's bodies, it doesn't mean you should be covered from head to toe. you just have to be honest and don't shame them.
