Shock banget habis liat Anne Hathaway di "Devil Wears Prada 2", terus langsung lanjut nonton dia di film ini, jaw dropped, literally, but in a good way. She really can be anyone, and she proves it here again. Bener-bener range-nya gila sih, dari yang glam sampai yang super vulnerable, semuanya kena.
Overall, the film is actually really good: full of beautiful metaphors about a relationship between two individual that isn’t always about romance, but still feels deeply intimate and, in a way, romanticized. The premise itself is already intriguing. I mean, who even thought of casting Anne Hathaway as a pop star trying to rediscover herself while rekindling her relationship with her designer best friend? And Michaela Coel absolutely stole the show for me, her character is hauntingly charismatic and intriguing. Their reunion slowly unearths old wounds: painful, yes, but also necessary, because both of them know those conversations need to happen if they want to move forward.
Visually and dialogue-wise, it’s stunning. Everything feels poetic and layered with metaphors. You can tell the director really took this seriously especially with all the entertainment value like songwriting and stage production, also how the story is written and presented. It’s one of those films where you can feel the intention behind every scene.
That said, I do have a slight critique. Since this is clearly an arthouse, niche kind of film, some of the metaphors feel too abstract: to the point where general audiences (including me) might get a bit lost and start questioning what it all means. And it’s kind of interesting, because with a cast like this, you’d expect the film to aim for a wider audience, right??? So the decision to go that abstract feels a bit... conflicting.
But hey, even with that, I still enjoyed it. The songs are great, and can we talk about the fashion? Mother Mary literally has one of the best closets ever. And yes, thank you for confirming that Anne’s character is actually named Mother Mary herself, iconic.
