The Testament of Ann Lee
Movie / TV
spoilers for history IG I'm generally agnostic and yet I've thought about Ann Lee at least once a week since I first saw this film back in January. Ann Lee was so clearly traumatized. she grew up in poverty. when she married to birthed and lost four children in seemingly a short period of time. she was jailed for practicing a religion outside of the church of england. it's no wonder that while in prison, she experienced visions and concluded that the reason for her trauma was the sex that lead to the children she lost. these visions meant that she was seen, by the Shakers (the shaking Quakers) as a leader and it became more dangerous for her to practice her religion as that wasn't something women were really able to do at the time. this danger lessens at first but then greatly increases when she comes to America because they clearly won't take kindly to a group lead by a woman that believes in abolition and are pacifists at the start of the revolutionary war. through all of this she remains strong in her convictions and beliefs. there are of course questions about how much of what we know of Ann is rooted in myth, misogyny, and just lies. there are also concerns that her beliefs are very rooted in this purity culture that still harms us hundreds of years later. all of this adds to why I think about Ann Lee so often. she's interesting and the way she navigated her trauma is something I think I'll always think about. my ancestors were Quakers so knowing Ann Lee is from an offshoot of that demonination makes me feel strangely connected to her. also, I was reading about the Shakers and at the end of the movie, they list that there are only 2 active members but I found an NPR article from August 2025 that said they went up to 3.
